Your First Step onto the Mat

Yoga has been practised for over 5,000 years and has been extensively studied by modern science. Its benefits for flexibility, strength, stress reduction and chronic pain management are well-documented, and beginners consistently report significant improvements in wellbeing within just a few weeks of regular practice.

What to Expect in Your First Week

Most beginners feel awkward and inflexible in their first classes — this is entirely normal and expected. Hatha and Yin yoga are the most beginner-friendly styles, emphasising slower movements, longer holds and instruction on proper alignment. Ashtanga and Vinyasa flow are generally better suited to those with some experience.

  • Start with Hatha or Yin yoga — the slowest and most instructional styles
  • You do not need to be flexible to start yoga — flexibility is a result, not a prerequisite
  • A yoga mat, comfortable clothing and an open mind are all the equipment you need
  • Aim for 3 sessions in your first week — daily practice is not necessary initially
